A Festival of Magic
The midwinter festival is supposed to celebrate magic, not murder…
Abraniotok’s Festival of Magic is a spark of warmth and light in the middle of the cold, wet winter. For Abyowith, it’s a chance to forget her homesickness and spend time with her girlfriend. But when Lisyrith uses paired magic rings to confess her love, Abyowith panics – and not just because she can’t make magic work.
Then, as Abyowith is desperately thinks how to explain her reaction, a giant miscreation leaps on the festival stage, bites a magician in half, and runs off into the city.
Now the Stalkers are tasked with finding the beast and the one controlling it. It all seems to revolve around the dead magician, but no one seems to know anything about the man. And even as Abyowith and the others search for answers, the creature strikes again.
With more victims appearing and enraged citizens taking to the streets to hunt the creature, Abyowith and the Stalkers must discover who the magician was, and find both the beast and the one controlling it before the city descends into chaos.
…and she still needs to figure out what to say to Lisyrith.

A captivating world with an engaging, unconventional heroine. Intriguing, intense and fun!
the start of an exciting new series from Erik Buchanan. His particular style of realistic fantasy – hurray for an author who actually knows how to swing a sword! – can appeal equally to readers of epic fantasy and fans of more straightforward action and adventure.
This introduction to his new world of the Stalker Chronicles has left me eager for what is coming next with the full-sized novels. The Trials of Abyowith is a novella worth checking out for anyone who enjoys action-filled fantasy with a strong YA heroine, and it’s all wrapped in a murder mystery.
I was immediately drawn into the story and the world, and the main character is appealing and a good balance of competent and overwhelmed.
