The Trials of Abyowith
The Knighthood Trials are supposed to be hard. They aren’t supposed to be murder…
Abyowith is ready to join the Knights of the Exculpatory Order and fight miscreations—the magical creatures plaguing the countryside. She can ride, shoot and swordfight, and if she has some trouble using magic, well, she’s certain she can overcome that. So, when she rides to the Trials, she fully expects to become a Knight Initiate.
She did not expect to lose everything and need rescue by the very knights she wanted to join. Or that Marfolio, Captain of the mysterious Royal Stalkers, would take an interest in her. Or that she would fail the Knights’ magical ability test.
And she certainly wasn’t expecting one of her fellow Initiates to be brutally murdered.
Now, with suspicion falling on her, and her future in the Knights at stake, Abyowith must pass her magic test, learn what the Captain of the Stalkers wants, and discover who is killing her fellow initiates before the killer comes after her…

A captivating world with an engaging, unconventional heroine. Intriguing, intense and fun!
the start of an exciting new series from Erik Buchanan. His particular style of realistic fantasy – hurray for an author who actually knows how to swing a sword! – can appeal equally to readers of epic fantasy and fans of more straightforward action and adventure.
This introduction to his new world of the Stalker Chronicles has left me eager for what is coming next with the full-sized novels. The Trials of Abyowith is a novella worth checking out for anyone who enjoys action-filled fantasy with a strong YA heroine, and it’s all wrapped in a murder mystery.
I was immediately drawn into the story and the world, and the main character is appealing and a good balance of competent and overwhelmed.
